Sturt Lions Football Club, founded in 2003 as part of the Adelaide Hills Hawks, has evolved significantly over the years. Initially influenced by Ajax Amsterdam's philosophy and playing in red and white, the club underwent a transformation in 2008, aligning with the Sturt Marion Thunder Soccer Club and adopting orange and blue colours. By 2011, Sturt Lions became an independent entity, fielding its own senior teams in the Football Federation of SA State League. The club's growth led to the creation of Blackwood Lions in 2014, catering to players transitioning from junior to senior levels. Boasting over 400 players across 30 teams by 2015, Sturt Lions further expanded to include girls' and women's teams, culminating in a Women's State League team that achieved promotion to the Women's National Premier League in 2024. Sturt Lions embodies the legacy of past Federation clubs like Orange Soccer Club, Sturt Soccer Club, and Blackwood Soccer Club, honouring this heritage with the annual Bep DeVries Award for the most progressive junior player, exemplifying the club's commitment to nurturing young talent.
